Hair loss is more complicated than most people realize. It can occur as a result of a whole constellation of causes, not just one or a small number of individual pathways. However, many of the product options that are available for treating or managing hair loss only address the issues of DHT and blood circulation to the scalp. In reality, it becomes necessary to hone in on multiple targets within a larger, comprehensive picture.

Since this would be difficult to achieve using synthetic chemicals, a new alternative is needed. According to Case Studies in Dermatological Medicine, whole-plant extracts offer a safe approach for improving the health and hair-producing capabilities of our follicles. Their report, authored by Sanusi Umar MD,  is entitled, A Multimodal Hair Loss Treatment Using A New Topical Phytoactive Formulation.

Beyond DHT and Blood Circulation

According to Dr. Umar, we have to consider a much broader view of hair loss conditions as a “cascade of physiological events.” For example, the transitions between the different hair cycle stages are mediated by regulatory proteins. And the upregulation of certain compounds like TFG-B, for example, will cause our follicles to slow the production of hair, transitioning them from anagen (i.e. active growth phase) to catagen (i.e. transition phase towards the telogen, non-growth phase).

Also, inflammation can damage the ability of our follicles to create new hair shafts.

Oxidative stress may also affect these structures, causing them to age prematurely.

While high DHT levels certainly contribute to genetic pattern hair loss (i.e. androgenic alopecia), it is not involved in other conditions such as traction alopecia, for example).

Likewise, addressing the issue of low blood circulation may not always be relevant to every individual hair loss scenario.

Five Hair Loss Patients Treated With GASHEE

Dr. Umar’s publication documents the experience of five patients who were treated with his topical, all-natural botanical formulation known as GASHEE.

This treatment includes various phytoactives derived from plant resources such as Fenugreek, Gotu Kola, Green Tea, and Eclipta Alba, among many others. Furthermore, these botanicals were processed to optimize the bioactivity of constituents using a proprietary cold formulation method that he developed to omit the use of heat, using close-to-ambient temperatures.

Four out of Dr. Umar’s five subjects had used Minoxidil for over a year, only to end up with failed results.

All five patients used GASHEE for 3-15 months before their hair growth improvements were documented using high-resolution photography, personal accounts, and in-clinic observations.

Why Plants?

Whole plant derivatives contain a variety of different compound variations, making them capable of addressing the multiple targets responsible for hair loss conditions.

Also, they are safer. Not only do they contain active ingredient compounds, but also variations that serve to neutralize their effects when needed.

To many, it may seem that using natural plant-based compounds to address hair loss is the stuff of make-believe science fiction or just plain wishful thinking. However, Dr.Umar’s publication offers a valid explanation of the feasibility of considering carefully selected botanical extracts for therapeutic applications on different forms of alopecia.  And the promising results experienced by his five patients provide real-life support for the usefulness of the multimodal paradigm.

The Concept of Hair Wellness

In reality, the follicular processes involved in the decline of our hair are more complicated than most of us are aware of. And across individuals, these phenomena cannot be attributed to just one or two factors as the basis for treatments.

More and more, we now have to think in terms of hair wellness and the overall state of health of our hair follicles.

As my publication discusses, the natural design of the whole plant and all its variations of useful phytoactive compounds is now something to consider over many forms of synthetic drugs, due to the complex, multifaceted nature of health conditions, such as hair loss.

While further studies will be needed to obtain more in-depth insights on my GASHEE formulation, we should all be encouraged to think of nature through a new perspective in our modern era.

Dr.Umar’s study sheds light on the idea that nature already has the answers for our health and well-being. It is simply up to us to look more deeply and discover these solutions for ourselves.

For those grappling with moderate to severe baldness, an FUE body hair transplant procedure is one possible pathway to permanent relief.  It is increasingly becoming the surgical treatment of choice for thinning hair in those that qualify, especially for overly-depleted patients, or those with significant amounts of scarring in their conventional donor areas, such as the nape and scalp.

Are some FUE punch types more effective when it comes to body hair transplant FUE? Absolutely – depending on the form of FUE hair loss treatment your doctor decides would be best to address your condition, he or she may recommend the use of a more specialized FUE punch type. There are nearly as many FUE punch types as there are varieties of FUE body hair transplant procedures.

FUE Punch Type – Cutting Edge

Different FUE punch types feature different types of cutting edges, each touting their own profile of advantages and disadvantages when it comes to body hair transplant.

Sharp FUE Punch Type

Sharp FUE punches feature a cutting edge that faces the skin. The bladed tip can either be manufactured with an outer bevel, an inner bevel, or a bi-beveled design. These are able to pierce the skin effectively but come with the added risk of punching through the follicle, killing the graft. This makes them unsuitable for BHT body hair transplant in a general, generic sense, as the curly path body hair grows in makes predicting how to navigate the punch much more challenging.

Blunt FUE Punch Type

Blunt FUE punches are characterized by a rounded or flat cutting edge. While this may feel like a counter-intuitive choice when it comes to a tool that is meant to precisely excise the flesh, this dullness actually protects the follicle grafts by preventing the transection of wider follicular units prone to splaying. As the body hair of certain types of patients grow in units of two follicles or more, blunt FUE punches have been a key component of the hair surgeon’s arsenal in the past.

Hybrid FUE Punch Type

Hybrid FUE punches are Dr. U’s contribution to the hair loss treatment industry. They turn the FUE punch type concept on its head by pointing the sharp edge of the punch away from the follicle within while a dull interior part faces the hair itself. A blunt inner wall gathers follicular units comprised of more than one follicle, ensuring the safety of them all.

The advent of the hybrid FUE punch type makes body hair transplant and FUE hair loss treatment possible for all patients, regardless of donor area or hair texture. It also minimizes scarring in the donor area.

FUE Punch Type – Accesorization

Different types of FUE punch types can be used to suit different patients and circumstances.

The shape and nature of the distal tip of the FUE punch type plays a critical role in the types of FUE hair loss treatment the FUE punch is most useful for.

Roomed FUE Punches

A roomed FUE punch expands inwardly as one moves up and into the lumen. They allow for the collection of bulkier grafts without increasing overall wound diameter, dramatically increasing the likelihood that the body hair grafts collected will survive when implanted.

Windowed FUE Punches

These punches have a window through which the provider can retrieve impacted grafts, making them less likely to be lost in the process of rescuing them while simultaneously clearing the way for subsequent ones.S

Hexagonal FUE Punches

Hex-shaped FUE punches are advantageous in that they are able to separate the follicle from its anchoring attachments. This attribute is vital when working with patients with very thick skin.

Video: Body Hair Transplant – Utilizing the Latest Hair Transplant Technology and FUE Punch Types

Body hair transplant has always been one of the most challenging mountains to climb for FUE hair surgeons of the past. Body hair, unlike head growing from the nape and scalp, often deviates from the path it appears to grow in above the surface of the skin. This is especially true for pubic hair, or the curly hair of patients of African descent.

This patient was able to restore coverage in his eyebrow and beard thanks to a body hair transplant made possible by Dr.UGraft ™.

Before FUE technology had been advanced sufficiently enough to take on the challenge of body hair transplant, it was generally not an option for many, especially patients of color. This was a shame – hair loss treatment via body hair transplant often leaves the recipient with much softer, more natural-looking results, especially for patients undergoing a hairline restoration.

Body hair is much less conspicuous than head and nape hair. Taking advantage of this valuable resource is now possible for every type of patient thanks to Dr. Umar’s Dr.UGraft ™ FUE system. The Dr. U Hair Clinic in Redondo Beach, Los Angeles is at the forefront of the FUE hair transplant movement.

Frequently-Asked Questions about FUE Punch Type and Body Hair Transplant in General

What is BHT?

BHT, short for body hair transplant, is a type of FUE hair loss treatment that makes use of donor grafts from areas of the body other than the scalp or nape.

Is BHT safe?

Body hair transplant, just like any other type of FUE procedure, is a safe and relatively non-invasive form of hair loss treatment. In the hands of a trained hair surgeon, there is very little risk in undergoing FUE hair surgery.

What benefit does BHT body hair transplant surgery have over a conventional FUE procedure?

There are plenty. Body hair transplant saves valuable grafts in traditional donor areas for a future FUE procedure that a patient may need to have done later on down the line. Body hair is also much softer and finer than hair from the head or nape area. Grafts harvested via a body hair transplant FUE procedure will generally produce much more realistic results than those derived in an ordinary FUE procedure utilizing hair from the head alone.

New Release of FUE Hair Restoration Technology from Dr U on Vimeo.

Worried about a growing bald spot or rapidly-receding hairline? Major hair loss is no joke – those suffering from baldness can certainly attest to that.

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) hair surgery, a permanent and relatively non-invasive treatment for baldness, wasn’t always a viable option for individuals of color due to a lack of properly-advanced technology. This was especially true for those with thick, curly, Afro-textured hair; an oft-administered hair test disqualified those with type 4 hair entirely.

Dr. Sanusi Umar, world-renowned cosmetic hair surgeon, found the limitation imposed by FUE tools of the past unacceptable. His recently-released Dr.UGraft™ suite of FUE hair transplant tools has changed the field of hair restoration, allowing doctors to perform FUE surgery on patients of any and all genetic makeup.

The Dr.UPunch™ Difference

At the helm of this breakthrough is the Dr.UPunch™ FUE punch tip. Its uniquely-flared mouth and graduated, expanded inner chamber were engineered to cater to those with textured hair specifically. Where uniformly-round and straight FUE punches of the past were prone to transecting even moderately curly hair, the Dr.UPunch™ excels.

Male pattern baldness can often be a source of stress for the patient.
Male pattern baldness can often be a source of stress for the patient.

Its patented grip, pull, and score functionality gently excises each follicle. The delicate shaft is protected from the sharp cutting edge with a buffering inner wall. This configuration guides the punch around the C-curve path Afro-textured hair grows in, allowing each specimen to be scored safely and effectively, in less time than ever.

The Dr.UPunch™, when supplemented with the Dr.UGraft™ Revolution console and Nurture handpiece, also features a pedal-operated irrigation system. Each graft is hydrated at the point of extraction, protecting your yield from reduction via desiccation. This greatly improves regrowth rates across the board and is able to restore hair where other FUE hair transplant systems fail.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Dr.UGraft™ Advantage and Los Angeles FUE Hair Restoration

What is the best way to surgically restore a receding hairline?

Over the counter topical solutions tend to be hit-or-miss at best. Invasive strip surgery can leave prominent, undesirable scarring in the donor area. Follicular Unit Excision (or FUE surgery, for short) is a universally-applicable procedure that allows you to improve coverage in any area permanently.

What is the best cure for male pattern baldness in black men?

FUE hair transplant surgery with the help of the Dr.UGraft™ system is able to restore the appearance of a receding hairline in patients of all hair textures, including curly, type 4 Afro-textured hair.
